Summer is just around the corner and there’s no better time to talk abut skincare after sun exposure. You know … we are all familiar with tan lines after such a sunny weekend, aren’t we?
If you ended up with lobster coloured skin or you’ve just acquired some tan – your skin is sun damaged! Yep, even light tan is a sign of a skin damage. There is no such thing as a healthy tan (except the fake one).
Sun exposed skin requires some tweaks in your routine.
First things first: as soon as you come home from the day out your skin needs just pure hydration! Despite the fact that aloe vera has no scientifically proven healing properties, it retains its naturally low temperature and cools the skin down plus it’s a humectant. Your skin will be grateful if you keep it in the fridge.
What to look for in aloe vera gel. They all look the same, don’t they?
Good quality aloe gel has really short list of ingredients and contains cold pressed aloe juice (99% and more). Even the best ones have to have some kind of preservatives to keep the product fresh. They have maximum of 4 ingredients, a little higher price tag and are not available in every Boots, but they are worth the money. If you can’t get your hands on one, but an affordable version of aloe is still better than anything else.
Here are some good options of quality aloe vera gels … so you can stock up for the Summer!
Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel
It’s important you don’t apply oils on your skin for a few hours after sun exposure as they retain heat in the top layer and it can cause further damage. Oils are present in all lotions, creams and balms as well, so don’t use them immediately. Wait for your skin to fully cool down.
Avoid all essential oils, alcohols and fragrances in products. A lot of bottles with “after sun” written all over are only recommended to be used day or more after the sun exposure. In my personal opinion they are just another marketing trick to make you buy yet another product.
The day after you can easily use your favourite body lotion without the “after sun” tag on it.
Please be responsible on the sun and don’t cause damage to your skin. There is so many streak free tanning products available that don’t require hours to develop and you don’t stink of fried chicken. Sun damage is irreversible and it only takes a little precaution to protect yourself.
